Your first model-home fair test

A model home is a small, fair test of a real design idea. One feature changed, indoor and outdoor temperature compared, and a written design version — that is enough to start a real pattern.

  1. Build a simple model

Shoebox, cardboard, or a kit — any size, as long as you can compare versions.

  2. Name ONE feature to test

Insulation, windows, orientation, or roof colour — not several at once.

  3. Place a thermometer inside

Same position each time, out of direct sun on the sensor itself.

  4. Record outdoor temperature too

Indoor minus outdoor tells you more than indoor alone.

  5. Leave it under similar conditions

Same time of day and similar weather so tests are comparable.

  6. Write your design version

Version 1, 2, 3 — so you and others can trace what changed.

Tips & safety

  • Quiet result?: A small difference is still real data — note it honestly rather than rounding up.
  • Safety: Adult supervision for any cutting tools, hot glue, or craft knives.
  • Cost: A shoebox model can cost under $10 — insulation scraps and card go a long way.
